C. Edward Polk, Jr. is a partner with Foley & Lardner LLP, where he is a member of the firm's IP Litigation Practice. Mr. Polk's practice focuses on litigation of complex patent cases in a variety of technologies, including pharmaceuticals, computer processors and databases, camshaft timing systems and HVAC systems. Mr. Polk also focuses on prosecuting and defending actions against the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office in reexaminations, appeals before the Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences, appeals before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and defense of disciplinary proceedings brought by the Office of Enrollment & Discipline. Prior to joining Foley, Mr. Polk worked as an associate solicitor for the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO), where he argued cases before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal and Fourth Circuits and the Eastern District of Virginia. Mr. Polk was also responsible for drafting and reviewing USPTO rules, regulations and legislation; and served as a prosecuting attorney for the Office of Enrollment & Discipline in disciplinary cases involving members of the Patent Bar. Mr. Polk's representative cases include Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. v. Dudas, 511 F.Supp.2d 81 (D.D.C. 2007); In re American Academy of Science Tech Center, 367 F.3d 1359 (Fed. Cir. 2004) and Humanoids Group v. Rogan, 375 F.3d 301 (4th Cir. 2004). Mr. Polk received his J.D., with honors, from The George Washington University Law School (1999). He earned his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from The University of Maryland College Park (B.Sc., 1994). Mr. Polk is co-chair of Foley's African American Affinity Group and chairs its tutoring program for Wilkinson Elementary School. Mr. Polk is also the current chair of the Diversity Committee for the American Intellectual Property Law Association, former chair of the Intellectual Property Law Section for the National Bar Association, and a member of the American Bar Association. Mr. Polk is also a member of the board of directors for the Institute for Responsible Citizenship.
