Robert C. Okonowski

Senior Counsel


Robert C. Okonowski is a senior counsel and intellectual property lawyer with Foley & Lardner LLP.  Robert has experience counseling clients to identify and protect their intellectual property rights and to minimize and control intellectual property risks.

Mr. Okonowski focuses his practice on drafting and prosecuting patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, as well as advising on foreign patent protection for clients ranging from the start-up phase to large corporations. Robert also performs patentability, state of the art, and freedom to operate analysis with a focus on maximizing patent protection while minimizing risk. He has experience in a wide variety of technology areas including telehealth technologies in the dental and orthodontic spaces, financial technologies, cloud computing technologies, automotive technologies including automation and electrification of vehicles, robotic technologies, and consumer products. He is a member of the Electronics Practice Group.
Prior to joining Foley, Robert was a patent associate at an intellectual property boutique. He evaluated patent protection and freedom-to-operate strategies in the automotive space, as well as prepared and prosecuted patent applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and abroad.


Mr. Okonowski earned his law degree from Wayne State University Law School (J.D., cum laude, 2016), where he was president of the Wayne Intellectual Property Student Association, as well as president of the Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity. He received his bachelor of science, department honors, in electrical engineering from Oakland University (B.S.E., 2013), where he was a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta National Honors Society. 


He is admitted to practice in Michigan and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.
