Partner Alejandro Gómez Strozzi is quoted in the newspaper Reforma, in the article “Alertan por apoyo a importaciones,” in which he states that support by the Mexican Secretariat of Economy which facilitates Mexican companies to import of machinery and equipment could be considered countervailing subsidies and protectionist measures by the United States.
According to Gómez Strozzi, the use of the so called Eighth Rule, which allows these products to be imported with administrative facilities and preferential tariffs, constitutes a prohibited subsidy for the U.S. Department of Commerce.
The challenge is that this measure only intended for structural steel, can be applicable to any product, he said.
