Partner Christopher Swift was quoted in a Law360 article, “Iran Deal Exit To Cast Shadow Over Future Negotiations,” about President Trump’s announcement Tuesday that he was pulling the U.S. out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran.
Swift said Trump’s decision has cast the U.S. as an unreliable ally and negotiator in the eyes of our European allies. “The view in Europe [Wednesday] morning is that the United States is no longer interested in being a good steward of global security and that the United States is not a reliable negotiating partner, and that’s concerning for a number of reasons,” he said.
He also said the decision could jeopardize the prospects for a nuclear deal with North Korea. “The most fundamental concept in international law, which is basically contract law, is that agreements must be kept,” he said. “Why would the North Korean government get into negotiations with the United States about standing down its nuclear program when the last negotiation with the United States and another aspiring nuclear state got turned over as soon as there was an election?”
