Associate Christopher Swift was quoted in an article in The Washington Post on February 10, 2014 titled, “Al-Qaeda’s expulsion of Islamist group in Syria prompts U.S. debate,” following his testimony on February 4, 2014 before the U.S. House of Representatives Armed Services Committee. The 2001 Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) – the law giving the president the authority to attack al-Qaeda affiliates – is now under review due to the emerging dissension among formerly affiliated terror groups. In response to the question of definition, Swift said, “The goal here is not to narrow the scope of the AUMF or to expand the scope of the AUMF, but to align our ways, means and laws in such a way that we can achieve the ends that we’re after.”
