Kayla O'Neal of Dallas ISD Wins Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition

The Dallas Morning News covered Gardere's Annual MLK Jr. Oratory Competition held on this date. Kayla O'Neal of J.P. Starks Math, Science and Technology Vanguard took first place in the Dallas competition held at The Majestic Theatre in downtown Dallas.

Kayla answered the question "If Dr. King were speaking at a March on Washington today, what would he say?" and stated:

"He would acknowledge the fact that African Americans have come a mighty long way," the 10-year-old Kayla said. "He would speak about the progress that we have made as a country. I believe Dr. King would have to, of course, mention the election of our first African American president, Barack Obama. I know his heart will swell with pride."
