Physician Engagement and Alignment: Developing the Health Provider Organization of the Future
The societal and market imperative for the health provider organization of the future is to reduce the growth trend in health care expenditures while improving quality of care. This will require the focused commitment of all providers across the continuum of care, including hospitals and physicians. Through engaged and coordinated planning, hospitals and their associated physicians can reduce unnecessary duplication of diagnostic and other services; reduce hospital re-admissions; reduce unnecessary ER visits; reduce avoidable medical errors; provide more effective preventative care and chronic disease management services; and reduce the cost of end-of-life care. Together, they also can make more prudent capital investment decisions, more effectively recruit and retain practitioners, compete with other health systems, and capture market share.
In this last program in our Hospital-Physician Alignment Series, we will:
Identify new health provider organization models positioned for future success
Examine options for hospitals to identify future physician leaders and engage them in effective strategic, business, and care transformation planning
Present a case study of a Physician Engagement and Alignment Team (PEAT) process adopted by a community hospital and independent physicians to guide future hospital-physician planning
Explore an evidence-based approach to care transformation that is being pioneered by the Center for Innovation at the Mayo Clinic
Review the implications of the new proposed accountable care organization (ACO) and Medicare Shared Savings regulations as well as federal agency guidances for the development of ACOs and achieving accountable care
