Donald C. McCleary Gardere Leadership Scholarship Awarded at Dallas Bar Foundation Event
Steve Good, managing partner of Gardere Wynne Sewell LLP, presented the 2012 Donald C. McCleary Gardere Leadership Scholarship to Jennifer Staton on Wednesday, March 28 in The Pavilion at the Belo Mansion in Dallas.
The Donald C. McCleary Gardere Leadership Scholarship is awarded annually to a second-year student at the Southern Methodist University Dedman School of Law in memory of former Gardere Managing Partner Don McCleary. Applicants must share information about their academics, leadership and character, and involvement with the law school and community. Honorees are those who have demonstrated leadership qualities consistent with the values embraced by Mr. McCleary.
Ms. Staton, this year's scholarship recipient, is in the top 10 percent of her law school class and is staff editor of the SMU Law Review in addition to serving as Vice President of Development for SMU Women in the Law and Director of Education and Programming for the SMU Health Law Association. She completed her undergraduate work at Duke University.
"Jennifer's involvement in her law school and the community is impressive," says Mr. Good. "Her academic success and proven leadership embody the spirit of Don McCleary. It is an honor to present her with this scholarship."
Mr. McCleary, who passed away in 1996, served as Gardere's managing partner from 1991 through 1995. His vision for Gardere included participation in local, state and national public affairs, humanitarian activities and pro bono work. He established many of the community outreach programs that have become a hallmark of the Firm, including the Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in January.
