Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition Winner Featured in Houston Chronicle
The Houston Chronicle recently covered the 21st Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Competition held at the historic Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Houston. Nhedrick Jabier, a fourth-grade student from Crespo Elementary, took first place in the Houston Competition.
Honoring the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Houston competition featured twelve fourth- and fifth-grade students who presented original speeches answering the question, “If Dr. King were alive today, what would he say about Muhammad Ali’s contribution to society?”
“The word ‘great’ is mentioned far too often. We call mediocre people great, even when they’re dead in their coffin,” said Mr. Jabier speaking from Dr. King’s point of view. “I was called great for being a catalyst, a spark of civil change, you know the gist. But that word is too humbling for me to accept. Ali sacrificed his name and lost some people’s respect, but I call it great, courageous and unique.”
