Of Counsel Elgie Sims was sworn in as state senator on January 26, 2018 for the 17th Senate District of Illinois, according to a Chicago Daily Law Bulletin article, “Lawyer-Legislator Moves to Senate, Takes Trotter’s Seat.” The district covers the southeast side of Chicago and stretches to parts of Will and Kankakee counties.
Sims is replacing Donne Trotter, a longtime Illinois Democratic leader who retired in January 2018. Sims, also a Democrat, served in the House from 2012 until moving into the Senate. He was the chairman of the House’s committee on criminal law.
“I humbly pick up the baton and vow to put families and communities first,” Sims said. “I will continue focusing on issues that are important to my constituents, including fighting for working families, protecting our most vulnerable populations, providing the best education, creating new jobs and economic opportunities throughout this community, reforming our state’s criminal justice system and reducing recidivism.”
