Alejandro Gomez-Strozzi Discusses U.S. – Mexico Relations Ahead of 2024 Presidential Elections
Foley & Lardner LLP partner Alejandro Gomez-Strozzi is quoted in the Reforma article, “‘Apaga’ política panel en energía,” discussing U.S. – Mexico relations ahead of both nation’s presidential elections in 2024.
While the United States is not pleased with Mexico’s current energy policy and its recent ban on the use of genetically modified corn, which is seen as a violation of the terms agreed upon by U.S., Mexico, and Canada when they signed the USMCA, the U.S. has postponed the initiation of any dispute panels against Mexico.
Gomez-Strozzi explains that given the upcoming presidential elections, it is not politically strategic to enter a dispute at this time. In Mexico, he commented, both energy and genetically modified corn will likely be used by presidential candidates to secure votes because they are issues of great interest to the agricultural, energy, and industrial sectors.
