Foley & Lardner LLP partner Lynn Gandhi is quoted in the Law360 article, “State & Local Tax Policy To Watch In 2023’s 2nd Half,” discussing a proposed plan to overhaul Detroit’s property tax system.
Gandhi said that the increased tax burden involved in the plan may give some potential developers pause when considering the purchase of vacant land.
“We have lots of vacant lots now,” she said. “Who’s going to buy them when the rate triples?”
Gandhi explained that the plan’s potential to increase taxes on businesses could be a sticking point during negotiations.
“From what I’m hearing from the business community in Detroit, there is very little support for this,” she added.
