James McFall Featured for Entertainment Lawyer of the Year Recognition
Foley & Lardner LLP partner James Carlos McFall is spotlighted in a Q&A with The Recorder for his recognition as an Entertainment Lawyer of the Year at the Law.com California Legal Awards.
Describing the professional achievement he is most proud of from the last year, McFall described his work advising former NFL star Reggie Bush on the formation and upcoming launch of his news sports technology venture. “As someone who operates at the intersection of sports, entertainment, and technology, it has been incredible to help an extremely talented and hardworking founder disrupt the industry and achieve his dream,” he explained.
McFall also offered advice for new attorneys entering entertainment law: “get out of your office, nurture relationships, and lean into your passions.”
“Building a network is crucial in this industry, as many opportunities arise from personal connections,” he continued. “Attend events, engage with clients and colleagues, and don’t shy away from showcasing your interests. The more you immerse yourself in the community, the better you’ll understand the nuances of the business and how to advocate effectively for your clients.”
On how entertainment law is evolving, McFall pointed to technology’s – namely artificial intelligence’s – transformative impact and a broader societal shift already underway.
“Young and underrepresented voices are now realizing their value and the power they hold, which is reshaping the landscape of entertainment,” he concluded. “The industry is working to catch up with these monumental shifts, and I am hopeful that these changes will enable innovative, next-generation attorneys to not just have a seat at the table, but also to have their voices heard.”
