Investing in the Next Generation of Litigators

Foley recently brought together litigation associates from across the firm for its annual in-person motion and deposition workshops. These two-day programs put emphasis on learning by doing and provide constructive feedback in a supportive atmosphere, helping this group hone their substantive skills.

The Motion Practice Workshop, held in San Diego for our second-year associates, allowed them to practice oral advocacy through interactive exercises and faculty-led instruction using a hypothetical case. Participants received real-time coaching and observed partners presenting a mock motion for preliminary injunction. The program culminated in oral argument presentations, where each associate was paired with an opponent and argued their position before a small group of faculty and peers, receiving personalized feedback to support their continued growth. 

In Dallas, the Deposition Workshop for third-year associates focused on developing essential deposition skills in a practical, hands-on, and supportive environment. Participants practiced conducting and defending mock depositions of parties and fact witnesses. The program emphasized effective questioning techniques, strategic information gathering, and strong defense skills. Associates received real-time coaching and feedback from experienced partners, allowing them to immediately apply what they learned and refine their approach on the spot.

In addition to skill building, these workshops fostered meaningful cross-office connections through collaborative group work, shared meals, and a networking dinner — strengthening relationships across the firm and reinforcing Foley’s investment in its next generation of litigators.
