Robert P. vom Eigen is a retired partner with Foley & Lardner LLP, where he was a member of the firm’s Government & Public Policy Practice and the Automotive Industry Team. He represented transportation clients in commercial, regulatory, and legislative matters.
Robert’s work on behalf of clients included obtaining a Presidential Executive Order authorizing construction of a cross‑border rail tunnel under the St. Clair River connecting Michigan and Ontario; negotiating a joint venture agreement with Amtrak for the movement of perishable commodities on Amtrak passenger trains for an express company client; and leading litigation and legislative efforts to clarify Amtrak’s condemnation authority under the Rail Passenger Service Act, resulting in a victory before the U.S. Supreme Court. His experience also included resolving service disputes between shippers and carriers, or among carriers, through negotiation or litigation; negotiating an arrangement with a taconite mining firm to secure competitive access to its facilities; and negotiating commuter rail use agreements, as well as handling applications and challenges to proposed rail mergers before the Surface Transportation Board and the Interstate Commerce Commission.
Robert was a member of the Association of Transportation Law Professionals and served as president of the Friends of Georgetown Waterfront Park, a nonprofit community organization that advocated for and raised funds to support construction of the park by the National Park Service.
