Foley Attorneys Publish on Escalating Betting Risks for College Sports
Foley & Lardner LLP attorneys Jon Israel, Zackary Flagel and J.P. Riley explore the growing impact of legalized sports betting on college athletics in their Sports Business Journal article, “Ticking time bomb goes off: Seeing the impact of sports betting on college athletes and integrity.”
The authors point to recent federal indictments tied to college basketball point-shaving conspiracy as a clear indication that long‑warned of risks to contest integrity have emerged in college sports.
The article also assesses new developments in sports betting practices that have intensified integrity concerns, including the continued growth of proposition bets, the expansion of in‑game wagering, and the emergence of federally regulated prediction markets that operate outside traditional state frameworks.
While outlining specific steps the NCAA has urged state and federal regulators to take, including prioritizing restrictions on prop bets or trades due to their direct impact on athletes, the authors emphasize that protecting integrity requires coordinated action across all stakeholders.
Beyond the NCAA’s requested measures, they identify additional measures stakeholders can pursue, including expanded education for athletes and officials, uniform age restrictions across betting platforms, clearer limits on athlete participation in wagering, and broader adoption of monitoring and compliance tools to detect suspicious activity.
“College sports occupy a fragile space — they depend on the belief that contests are fair, athletes are uncompromised, and competition outcomes are genuine,” the authors conclude. “When that belief is undermined, not only does the scoreboard lose meaning, but so too does the institutional and cultural value of collegiate athletics.”
The author’s article also appeared in Sports Business Journal‘s newsletter.
