Foley Team Represents Displaced Barry Farm Residents in Pro Bono Civil Rights Case

Partner Joe Edmondson and Senior Counsel Brian Kapatkin, along with a team of Foley lawyers, are representing the residents of the Barry Farm public housing community in Washington DC in a housing discrimination case that was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. The pro bono case is being handled in conjunction with the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs and carries on the firm’s longstanding tradition of working with the WLC on significant civil rights litigation.

The case seeks to remedy the discriminatory impact that the plan for redeveloping Barry Farm will have on families with children who live there. “We allege violations of the federal Fair Housing Act and the D.C. Human Rights Act, based on the concern that the families will be displaced without sufficient units set aside to allow them to return. The case will also address serious conditions issues at Barry Farm for all residents while it is undergoing redevelopment, including under the U.S. Housing Act,” Edmondson said.
