Today, Corporate Board Member magazine announced the results of its ninth annual America’s Best Corporate Law Firms survey, sponsored by FTI Consulting. More than 2,200 general counsel were surveyed and, with a 10.5% response rate, named Foley & Lardner as the best corporate law firm in Milwaukee.
Corporate Board Member/FTI Consulting’s annual study identifies the top 20 national corporate law firms and the top corporate law firm in 25 major metropolitan areas, according to general counsel and directors serving on boards of publicly traded companies.
“We’ve seen respected legal firms close their doors and layoffs of seasoned lawyers in what seems like unprecedented times for corporate law firms,” says TK Kerstetter, president and CEO of Corporate Board Member. “At the same time, those firms that have adapted to handle down-cycle issues and company restructurings are flourishing, while traditional corporate areas remain somewhat stagnant. Obviously, the strong and smart will survive and, I predict, do rather well in 2010.” Directors and general counsel across the country named New York-based Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom as the firm they would most likely turn to for legal issues with a national scope. The complete national and metropolitan rankings will appear in the second-quarter issue of Corporate Board Member and can be accessed online at http://www.boardmember.com/currentissue.aspx.
About the Survey
In early 2009, Corporate Board Member surveyed over 6,300 general counsel and directors serving on boards of publicly traded companies listed with the NASDAQ and NYSE Amex. The study
consisted of 27 different questionnaires created for directors and general counsel, 25 of which were
individually tailored for general counsel residing within one of the 25 largest U.S. metropolitan
statistical areas (MSAs). Another survey was created for general counsel who do not live within the 25 largest U.S. MSAs. A final survey was created for directors only and focused specifically on national law firms. To be included in the MSA list, each firm had to practice business, corporate, or commercial law and had to be one of the 10 largest firms in its area by number of attorneys practicing at that location. Corporate Board Member compiled the lists of local firms using Martindale-Hubbell’s Law Directory. The top law firm in each MSA is listed in the magazine based on the number of votes received.
