The Dallas Morning News covered Gardere's 23rd Annual MLK Jr. Oratory Final Competition held on this date at the Majestic Theatre in downtown Dallas. Etana King, a fifth–grade student from John Neely Bryan Elementary School, took first place at the Dallas competition.
Eight fourth-and fifth-grade students competed at the Dallas finals event and presented original speeches answering the question: "If Dr. King were to win the Nobel Peace Prize today, what would he say in his acceptance speech?" Etana stated:
"Dr. King would acknowledge that he received this prize for peace during a time when our world is overwhelmed with violence. He would be mindful that our young people are being bullied and gun down on school campuses – killed just for being at the wrong place at the wrong time wearing the wrong clothing."
Etana was the second place winner at the 2014 competition and returned this year to win the first place spot. Her brother, Chinelo, won the competition in 2013.
