Houston Public Media featured recordings of the top three speeches at the 21st Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Competition on its website. Nhedrick Jabier, a fourth-grade student from Crespo Elementary, took first place in the Houston Competition. Fourth-grader Zyahra Barnes from Windsor Village Elementary took second place, and Kamarah Pennamon from Blackshear Elementary took third.
Twelve fourth- and fifth-grade students competed at the Houston finals event and presented original speeches answering the question, “If Dr. King were alive today, what would he say about Muhammad Ali’s contribution to society?”
