The Dallas Morning News interviewed Wesley Stoker, the winner of the 2018 Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition in Dallas, on the inspiration behind his first-place speech.
Wesley, who in his speech says, “I may not look like Dr. King, but I believe like Dr. King,” cited his father as the motivation behind his words.
According to the publication, “Wesley pointed out during his speech that he, like King, was a preacher’s son, and that his experiences in the church molded him.”
The publication writes that “Wesley, a student at Harry C. Withers Elementary, shared his dream of love, asking the audience to embrace differences, show compassion and share a childlike love for one another.”
