Of Counsel Elgie Sims Jr. was quoted in the
Chicago Daily Law Bulletin article, “
72-Hour Wait to Buy Any Gun Takes Effect Jan. 1,” about a new, 72-hour waiting period to purchase guns in Illinois. The new law will take effect in January 1, 2019.
Sims, a state senator representing Illinois’ 17th Legislative District, said the measure will give law enforcement more time to run background checks on the potential gun purchaser.
“If an individual is thinking about harming others or harming themselves, they’ve got the ability to do it,” Sims said. “As we know, if a gun or firearm is present, the likelihood that an injury or fatality is going to happen increases. We wanted to make sure that we put the cooling-off period into law so that it applies to all guns.”
