Overview

Stefan Lehnardt is an associate in the Intellectual Property Department with Foley & Lardner LLP. Stefan is based in the firm’s Salt Lake City office where he is a member of the firm’s Intellectual Property Electrical Group. He represents clients in patent prosecution and other areas of intellectual property law. Stefan has experience spanning the entire lifecycle of patents, including drafting and prosecuting patent applications, drafting petitions for and defending against inter partes reviews (IPRs), analyzing assertions of infringement, and litigating patent claims.
Stefan also has experience in analyzing the patent landscape of a technology to aid companies in making decisions regarding future avenues of innovation and areas of intense competition. He also has experience in assisting companies in entering into licensing agreements and in evaluating patents for potential purchase.
Stefan provides patent counsel in a broad range of technologies related to artificial intelligence, virtual environments for training individuals and autonomous vehicles, autonomous vehicle systems, renewable energy infrastructure and management, Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing, and virtualization technologies. A large part of his experience in patent prosecution has focused on the challenges in patenting software.

Prior to joining Foley, Stefan was an associate at another Utah firm where he worked on patent prosecution matters. While in law school he focused his studies mainly on intellectual property through courses such as patent law, copyright law, trademark law, and advertising law. Stefan was a teaching fellow for Harvard Law School’s CopyrightX Course under Professor William Fisher.
