Darmody Brings Extensive Trial Experience in Environmental, Maritime and Land Use Matters.
Foley announced today that Stephen J. Darmody has joined the firm’s Business Litigation & Dispute Resolution and Environmental Regulation Practices as a partner in its Miami office. Previously, Darmody was a partner at Shook, Hardy & Bacon LLP.
Darmody brings a vast amount of experience as a trial lawyer, criminal prosecutor and environmental regulator to his role with Foley. He represents leading corporations and their executives in civil and criminal actions involving all aspects of environmental law, maritime law and land use litigation, including recent cases of environmental pollutants allegedly causing injury to people or damage to property. He has also handled matters involving unlawful land use decisions, the cross border transportation of contraband, and the release of hazardous materials during transportation.
Before entering private practice, Darmody served as an officer and attorney in the U.S. Coast Guard holding various high-level positions, including senior officer managing legal affairs, where he represented transportation interests in matters involving the environment, customs, and in dealings with government agencies, particularly at the federal level.
“Stephen brings a unique combination of experience that will further strengthen our environmental and corporate litigation capabilities,” said Michael J. Tuteur, chair of the firm’s Litigation Department. “Adding such a high-caliber trial attorney in government enforcement and compliance will be of immediate value to our clients who are facing challenging environmental litigation issues.”
Throughout his career, Darmody has served as both an enforcement officer and as lead counsel in matters brought under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act; the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act; the Hazardous Materials Transportation Act; the Toxic Substances Control Act; the Clean Air Act; the Clean Water Act; the Coastal Zone Management Act; the Safe Drinking Water Act; the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships; the Oil Pollution Act; the Endangered Species Act; the National Environmental Policy Act; the Marine Mammal Protection Act; Florida’s Growth Management Act; and several other state laws.
Darmody’s vast experience with environmental law issues will add considerable weight to the firm’s well established Environmental Regulation Practice, one of the largest environmental law practices in the United States with more than 25 attorneys in strategic locations throughout the country.
“Foley provides countless opportunities for me to grow my practice on a national scale,” said Darmody. “I look forward to leveraging the firm’s tremendous reputation and working with its many talented attorneys to expand our services to clients involved in a wide range of complex litigation matters and disputes.”
His arrival comes on the heels of other recent additions to the Miami office, including prominent transactional attorney Francisco J. Cerezo, chair of the Latin America Practice, international banking and finance attorney John L. Murphy and international public finance attorney Diego R. Figueroa Rodriguez.
“We are excited about adding another well-recognized and experienced trial lawyer to the firm as we continue to expand our office in Miami,” said William E. Davis, managing partner of Foley’s Miami office. “This is very consistent with Foley’s Miami growth strategy.”
A frequent author and lecturer on various environmental law issues, Darmody was named the “Outstanding Young Coast Guard Lawyer of the Year” in 1991 by the American Bar Association, and the “Outstanding Career Coast Guard Lawyer of the Year” by the Judge Advocates Association in 1996. He is also listed in Who’s Who in American Law and Who’s Who in America.
