Formation of a system to combat corruption in the private sector was the focus of the FCPA and Local Regulatory Seminar: “Legal and Compliance Aspects in Combating Corruption” held on Sept. 12 in Rio de Janeiro. Brazilian Business covered the seminar and featured comments by Gardere Partner Charles E. Meacham.
"Companies in Brazil and elsewhere in the world can be investigated by the FCPA, as long as they are acting in the United States,” Mr. Meacham said. “Currently, there are 87 companies under investigation for alleged breaches. This year one company has been fined more than $ 54 million."
