Partner Judy Waltz was quoted in an article, “New Medicare Beneficiary ID Card to Enhance Security,” covering the advantages and disadvantages to Medicare replacing its Social Security number-based Health Insurance Claim Numbers (HICN) with Medicare Benficiary Identifiers (MBI).
Waltz explained that removing Social Security numbers from the Medicare identification system would easily reduce cases of identity theft, but the MBIs will deter new fraud rather than recover fraudulent funds that appeared under the HICNs.
