Foley & Lardner LLP partner John Turlais shared insights on the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement in the Milwaukee Business Journal article, “Strattec Security dodges major tariff impact — but now another challenge is on horizon.”
Turlais explained that companies that import products, parts, and components from Mexico can do so duty free if they comply with the USMCA. To comply with the agreement, he continued, a company needs to certify that products or goods being shipped truly originated from Mexico or Canada.
Turlais added that the certification policy has existed since the North American Trade Agreement and continues under USMCA, which was signed by the leaders of the three countries in January 2020.
