Monica Call in Law.com Leadership Spotlight – 'I see my role as both coach and advocate'
Foley & Lardner LLP partner Monica Call reflects on her career journey, leadership, and mentorship in Law.com‘s “How I Made It Office Managing Partner” series.
Of her early career, Call shared that she “would tell my younger self to be patient with the process of building a career and to recognize that success is as much about relationships as it is about skills.”
“Early on, I was focused on technical excellence — which is critical — but I’ve since learned that investing time in mentoring others, cultivating trust, and contributing to a healthy firm culture is equally important,” she told Law.com.
Today, as managing partner of Foley’s Salt Lake City office, Call focuses on supporting and developing her team, building sustainable pathways for advancement, retaining and growing top talent in Foley’s key sectors, and nurturing a collaborative culture. “Approachable and relationship-oriented, I see my role as both coach and advocate,” she said of her leadership style, emphasizing her commitment to uplifting the office’s lawyers and business professionals.
Call highlighted the Salt Lake’s office development across the last four years as part of Foley’s overall strategic growth. “We want to continue this momentum locally and nationally to build an even stronger team of lawyers who are deeply invested in the success of our clients and the firm,” she explained. “When people feel supported, challenged, and valued, they do their best work and that directly benefits our clients and our culture.”
On the mark she hopes to leave on the firm and the legal industry at large, Call said she hopes her impact is reflected within the people she works with.
“We all know the legal profession can be challenging so supporting junior attorneys as they grow, creating real opportunities for advancement, and helping them find fulfillment both professionally and personally is deeply important to me,” Call added. “More broadly, I want to foster an environment where people have the confidence to build the careers they want. If along the way I can help shape future leaders who are not only exceptional lawyers but also generous mentors and trusted advisers, I’ll consider that a success.”
