J.P. Riley Spotlighted as a Most Promising Newcomer Finalist in Law.com's California Legal Awards
Foley & Lardner LLP associate J.P. Riley is recognized in Law.com as a Most Promising Newcomer finalist for the 2026 California Legal Awards.
Riley explains how his background as a teacher shaped his approach to law, noting, “Learning how to manage hundreds of students and understand their diverse needs and interests gave me skills that directly translate into legal client management.”
He also underscores the importance of asking questions, saying, “as new attorneys, it’s easy to get wrapped up in assignments like drafting a brief, conducting research or reviewing documents without knowing the strategic goal behind it.” Riley adds, “understanding the ‘why’ ensures your contributions align with your clients and partners’ needs and wants.”
Furthermore, he emphasizes the value of “managing up” and maintaining open communication. “Asking questions, seeking advice and acknowledging challenges are essential to producing the best work,” Riley concludes.
