Foley’s 2022 Summer Associate Program is ‘In the Books’

Foley’s Summer Associate Program is designed to introduce first- and second-year law students to a career in the legal industry and give them a sense of what life at Foley is like and what to expect as an associate here. Spending the summer with us means more than stacks of briefs and endless document review. It means exposure to cutting-edge legal issues and high-profile matters, connections and engagement, community service, professional development, camaraderie, leadership, and much more.

This year’s program started on May 23 and concluded on July 29. After a remote-only summer associate program in 2020 and a hybrid format in 2021, Foley was thrilled to welcome law students back into the office for an in-person 2022 Summer Associate Program that was bigger than ever before, comprising 97 first- and second-year law students from 40 different law schools in 18 Foley offices across the country. After an exceptional summer, Foley is proud to have been ranked No. 11 nationally in The American Lawyer’s 2022 Summer Associate Satisfaction Survey.

Before our 2022 summer associates headed back to school, we asked them what their favorite part of the summer was. Here is what they had to say!

My favorite project this summer was preparing a memo regarding nuanced state procedural rules. A good part of my memo was ultimately used in a motion that Foley ended up winning.

I loved all of the events related to the Boys & Girls Club. It was good, important work; it helped show Foley's commitment to the community; and it provided a more casual, personal environment to interact with attorneys, staff, and other summers.

My favorite thing this summer was observing my partner mentor take two in-person depositions. The experience was thrilling as I had never observed something this like before, and it was a great opportunity to color in the picture of the litigation process.

My favorite project entailed researching Wisconsin law related to deed restrictions, drafting a deed restriction based on that research, and then talking to the client about the document. It was cool to see the tangible effect that my work had on the client's day-to-day business.

I really enjoyed drafting a motion for summary judgment on a patent infringement case. I didn't know much about patents or IP litigation before starting my summer at Foley.

I got to listen in on a client call and then review contracts for a potential asset acquisition. This was a great insight into what I would do as an associate.

I really liked working on finance projects. The associate I worked with really took the time to give me instructions and an overall explanation of why the project I was working on was important to the transaction.

My favorite project was being able to get involved in pro bono work and help with an asylum case.

I very much enjoyed working on a CLE presentation for a client. It felt like impactful work, and I appreciated the opportunity to contribute.

My favorite project this summer was the research I did for a partner. I really appreciated that she trusted my work enough to send what I found directly to the client.

I was able to help on a deal for a good part of the timeline and was able to see it through the close. I felt like I was a member of the team.

My favorite activity was getting to know the attorneys in the Milwaukee office over lunch and coffee. It was great to be able to meet people in person, and it made me excited to join the firm next fall.
