Good Morning America featured the 2019 Foley Gardere Annual MLK Jr. Oratory Competition as part of its Martin Luther King Jr. Day special segment honoring the late civil rights activist. Now in its 27th year in Dallas and 23rd year in Houston, this year’s event featured fourth- and fifth-grade students presenting original three- to five-minute speeches answering the question, “What would Dr. King say to the children of today’s world?”
“Dr. King would tell us that words matter, so we should use words that inspire people instead of using words that are hurtful and unkind,” said Presley Rivers, a fifth-grade student at Harry C. Withers Elementary School in Dallas.
When asked what she would say to Dr. King if he were here today, Alexandra Torres, a fifth-grader at Wilmer-Hutchins Elementary School in Dallas, responded, “Thank you, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. What you started, we are going to finish, and we are going to finish it well.”
