During the last 18 months, the federal government has shown keen interest in the compliance activities of health care providers in Florida. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) has taken the bold step of creating a Florida field office to focus more intensively on state fraud and compliance investigations.
This session discussed the likely compliance initiatives on which the government will focus in Florida — including the Medicare Durable Medical Equipment, Prosthetics, Orthotics, and Supplies (DMEPOS) Competitive Bidding Program, which is currently on hold. The program also examined the increased compliance scrutiny of relationships between federal health care program providers and the vendors or other entities with which they have relationships. We also discussed the effects in Florida of several off-label pharmaceutical marketing cases.

Prior to joining Foley, Ms. Sorensen was chief in the Administrative & Civil Remedies Branch of the Office of Counsel to the Inspector General (OCIG) at the United States Department of Health and Human Services.
