Mark Neuberger Offers Insight on Potential United Auto Workers Strike

16 August 2023 News

Foley & Lardner LLP of counsel Mark Neuberger is quoted in the Law360 article, “Big 3 Face Big Demands As UAW Members Vote On Strike,” discussing the looming expiration of United Auto Workers’ labor contracts with major automakers and the ongoing bargaining between the parties towards a new deal.

Neuberger said the union’s public push to advance its interests during negotiations is part of the typical “performance art” that surfaces during collective bargaining and generates national media attention, however it will not necessarily affect the mood at the bargaining table.

He emphasized though that the public posturing puts a significant amount of pressure on the union, as the normal dealmaking process means union negotiators will have to give ground on some points. This could present an issue for the UAW if the deals it secures with automakers do no match members’ expectations, he explained.

"It puts a lot of pressure on them if you overplay your hand," Neuberger added.
