Associate

AnTu (“James”) Xie brings over nine years of patent prosecution experience to his role as an associate in Foley’s Electronics Practice Group. He approaches his work as both storyteller and strategist. As a storyteller, he crafts clear, evidence-based narratives that explain why complex technologies merit patent protection. As a strategist, he works to anticipate how others might later try to design around the “heart” of an innovation while avoiding its more trivial details.

James focuses his practice on applied AI/machine learning innovations, quantum computing hardware, and wireless technology, and has extensive experience in related areas such as software, sensor technology, and subsurface systems. He takes pride in his talent for illustrating the key technical innovations in complex applications—translating abstract concepts such as special training sequences, qubit architectures, or specialized data structures into patent narratives that resonate with both technical and legal decision makers. Before becoming an associate, James served as a patent agent at various law firms, where he drafted and successfully prosecuted dozens of patent applications across these fields.

While in graduate school, James studied petroleum engineering as a research assistant at Texas A&M University, focusing on mathematical modeling of microscale fracture phenomena in shale. He had also previously evaluated the patentability and business potential of a wide range of inventions at Northwestern University’s Innovation and New Ventures Office after obtaining an M.S. in materials science.
