One of Foley’s largest offices, our Chicago location has expanded to more than 140 attorneys who serve a broad range of clients based in Chicago and beyond, including prominent Chicago corporations and institutions, multinational and local companies, and financial and banking institutions.

Our Chicago office provides comprehensive services in the areas of business law, health care, intellectual property, litigation, manufacturing, real estate, and regulatory and tax and individual planning as well as dynamic areas of law such as telecommunications, information technology and outsourcing, product distribution, project finance, airport services, and corporate compliance. The collective strength of our practices — combined with our office's exceptional reputation — has attracted a formidable pool of talented attorneys with keen legal insight. In fact, a number of our attorneys are adjunct law professors at prestigious Chicago universities, including the University of Chicago Law School and Northwestern University School of Law, teaching such courses as litigation and trial advocacy.

Our Chicago attorneys have particular skill and experience in the following areas:

Broker-Dealer: Our Chicago office houses one of the largest broker-dealer and commodities futures practices in the United States. With a practice that covers the interrelated areas of broker-dealer regulation, stock markets, and derivatives, we routinely address a broad spectrum of issues in counseling and representing brokers, dealers, derivatives dealers, exchanges, clearing agencies, and their customers. These issues include securities regulation and compliance issues, transactions, new product development, regulatory inspections, investigations, and litigation.

Manufacturing: Our Chicago attorneys have been trusted advisors to leading U.S. manufacturers for many years. And as our clients move into the future of manufacturing, we are working shoulder to shoulder with them to focus on advanced manufacturing issues such as continuous process improvement; customer-focused innovation; human capital acquisition, development, and retention; enterprise-wide supply and distribution chain management and collaboration; sustainability; global engagement; reshoring; facilities siting, reconfiguration, and management; foreign direct investment; strategic acquisitions and divestitures; government and public affairs; next-generation technologies; and Big Data, as well as traditional areas such as corporate, labor, tax, and IP. We take a holistic approach to the industry, working closely with colleagues from all practices, industry teams, and offices across the firm to deliver comprehensive solutions that help you achieve your business goals.

Bankruptcy and Business Reorganizations: Our attorneys have the skills, experience, and proven success to find and implement solutions in reorganizations, bankruptcies, and workouts. We meld corporate trust, bond default, and bankruptcy experience with finance, litigation, tax, labor and employment, environmental, regulatory, and other practice concentrations. We regularly represent creditors' committees, secured creditors, debtors, cross-border and domestic creditors, financial institutions, and indenture trustees.

Transactional and Securities: We represent both issuers and underwriters in publicly offered equity and debt securities that require registration with the SEC and issuers of privately placed securities. Our attorneys have represented clients in industries such as manufacturing, retail, mining, health services, environmental services, real estate, energy, and financial services. We also can assist you through all stages of the business life cycle, offering sophisticated legal advice on creating, structuring, financing and growing businesses. We also advise on mutual funds, investments, and hedge funds as well as broker-dealers.

Energy: We provide counsel to energy and utility clients on a full range of matters from infrastructure finance and environmental compliance to regulatory matters involving the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and other agencies. We have substantial experience in energy and utility operations, including significant skills in electric energy restructuring; nuclear energy facilities siting and certification; reliability and outage investigations; issues involving alternative and renewable energy sources; and controversies involving electric and magnetic fields.

Intellectual Property: Our Chicago office provides counsel on the full range of IP matters, including the acquisition, licensing, transfer, protection, and enforcement of rights in patents, trademarks, copyright, mask work registrations, and trade secrets. We also represent clients in the negotiation of know-how, confidential disclosure, consulting, development, assignment, and licensing agreements as well as in litigation.

Real Estate: We can assist you in every aspect of real estate law, from the structuring and implementation of complex acquisitions, developments, and financings to advice on individual and commercial land use and zoning issues. Chicago also serves as the resident office of our national Real Estate Practice chair and to two full-time land use planners who provide specific, cost-effective insight into a variety of zoning and land use issues.

Our attorneys are deeply involved in the city's public and civic affairs and maintain a longstanding commitment to pro bono and charitable efforts that enhance Chicago's vibrant community. We support such organizations as Blessings in a Backpack, The Field Museum, Ravinia Festival, Chicago Public Schools, and Cristo Rey Jesuit High School.
