Joseph Swanson Assesses Key Cyber Compliance Concerns as DOJ Attracts Whistleblowers
Foley & Lardner LLP partner Joseph Swanson highlighted common cybersecurity compliance issues amid the U.S. Justice Department’s ongoing civil cyber fraud initiative in the Bloomberg Law article, “Justice Department Cyber Fraud Push Yields Wave of Settlements.”
Swanson said one main compliance issue is that many government contractors have “siloed” their compliance and information security functions, meaning team members “do not speak each other’s language.”
He pointed to an example of a member of a company’s information security team raising a compliance concern. Swanson said the compliance team needs to hear about it so that the company can investigate and address the problem, but “if those complaints go unaddressed, they may lead to whistleblower complaints.”
