Roberto J. Fernandez is a patent and intellectual property attorney with Foley & Lardner LLP. Roberto has extensive experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications both in the U.S. and internationally. Roberto has detailed knowledge of various automotive technologies, including electric vehicle systems, aftertreatment systems, and various engine systems, building management systems, control architectures, and consumer products. Roberto has also prepared and prosecuted numerous design applications and routinely researches developments in design law.
Roberto studied at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (B.S. mechanical engineering, 2014), the University of Notre Dame (M.S. patent law, 2015), and the Chicago-Kent College of Law (J.D., 2019). While at Chicago-Kent, Roberto earned several CALI awards (awarded to the highest graded student for a class), including in patent law, patent office practice, international intellectual property law, and law of trade secrets. Roberto worked full time at Foley throughout his entire enrollment at Chicago-Kent. Roberto graduated from Chicago-Kent in 36 months (as opposed to the 33 months it takes a typical student that is not working in a similar capacity, or the 45-57 months it takes a typical student that is working in a similar capacity). Roberto is a member of the firm's Mechanical & Electromechanical Technologies Practice and the design rights group.
Roberto has held positions as the lead research and development technician and sales engineer for a leader in the firefighting industry. During his time with that company, he designed, tested and built one of the company’s flagship products. In addition, Roberto served as a standards designer intern for a Fortune 500 company.
