Sarah Rieger is an intellectual property litigator, representing clients in several industries connected with patent and trademark disputes, licensing disputes, and other areas of intellectual property law. She is also a member of her office Pro Bono Committee and is an active participant in community activities.

Sarah has extensive experience practicing before federal courts, both at the trial and appellate level, as well as practicing before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s Patent Trial and Appeal Board in inter partes review (IPR) proceedings. In addition to representing clients in active disputes, she also conducts non-infringement and freedom-to-operate analyses to aid clients in avoiding future litigation.

The clients Sarah works with represent a wide range of sectors, including academic research and licensing, medical devices, health care services, recreational equipment, commercial manufacturing, and hospitality, among others. With a broad foundational background in the sciences and a degree in biomedical sciences, Sarah enjoys working with a variety of different fields. In this regard, she has counseled and represented clients in patent and licensing disputes and IPR proceedings involving a wide range of technologies, including not only biomedical-related technologies like pharmaceuticals, genetic sequencing methods and devices, medical implants, surgical tools, and orthodontic treatment planning methods, but also technologies such as archery equipment, exercise equipment, wearable fitness devices, food and beverage containers, geological survey equipment, networked camera systems, and plumbing valves.

Before joining Foley, Sarah gained experience in the intellectual property group of a distinguished law firm as a summer associate, where she engaged in the research of legal issues and case law related to patent, trademark, and copyright litigation and assisted in drafting arguments for motions and briefs.
